Office of International Affairs Charter

 

Article 1: The mission of the Office of International Affairs (OIA) is to continue the OCU tradition of producing well-rounded professionals ready to meet the evolving needs of the business and general communities, as well as to contribute to achieving the Ministry of Education’s goal of cultivating Taiwan’s “self-realizing modern citizens” technically and professionally adept, creative, confident of their national identity and possessing the global perspective necessary to their success in our growing “global village.”

The primary mandate of the Office is to ‘globalize’ or ‘internationalize’ the OCUcampus, and will provide institutional leadership in promoting and facilitating (as sole sponsor or in cooperation with academic departments/centers): 

1.curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities that promote an intercultural/international campus environment. 

2.programming that will provide students opportunities for academic credit-granting activities abroad. 

3.programming that encourages and facilitates faculty professional development in the intercultural/international area. 

4.involving OCU in intercultural/international activities sponsored by local, national or international government, business, and not-for-profit organization. 

Article 2: The OIA is established as a second-tier administrative unit the OIA reports directly to the Office of the Provost.

Article 3: The business of the OIA will be under the direction of a Director, who will be appointed by the President from among the full-time faculty.

Article 4: In accordance with administrative need, the OIA may establish relevant ad-hoc groups under its direction OIA administrative personnel will be recruited from among current full-time OCU employees.

Article 5: The primary duties of the OIA are defined as:
1.advocating for the ‘holistic’ nature of internationalization and facilitating the integration of a global perspective throughout the curriculum.

2.designing and implementing, either as sole sponsor or in cooperation with academicdepartments/centers, curricular,co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities that promote the development of intercultural awareness and a global perspective. 

3.developing (in cooperation with academic departments) summer- and semester-abroad programs whereby students receive academic credit for their participation. 

4.cultivating exchange and cooperation agreements (both cultural and curricular) with foreign institutions whereby students and faculty at both institutions benefit from participation. 

5.promoting and facilitating a stronger faculty by providing resources and logistical support for ‘international’ professional development activities including (but not limited to) membership in international professional organizations, participation in professional activities abroad, cooperation with international scholars on research and teaching projects enrollment in coursework (locally or abroad) intended to improve intercultural/international skills/abilities.

6.proposing institutional policies that will recognize and reward faculty achievement in the intercultural/international area,including retention/promotion considerations. 

7.promoting and facilitating (in cooperation with academic departments/center) scholarly activities, including international conferences and workshops. 

8.enlisting alumni and local business support for both faculty and student intercultural/international activities (research,study, and other intercultural/international work) and representing the institution in advocating for designing and implementing on- and off-campus intercultural/international activities in cooperation with local, national, and international government, business,and not-for-profit organizations.

Article 6: The activities of the OIA will be funded according to regulations governing institutional accounting procedures.

Article 7: This Charter will take effect upon approval by the Institutional Affairs Committee, which must also approve any amendments or revisions.
